In the garden and orchard
- Pick tender crops before frostBring in tomatoes, peppers, basil, squash and melons; green tomatoes ripen indoors.
- Put beds to restPull spent plants, sow a cover crop or mulch with leaves; note what grew where for next year’s rotation.
- Clean up dropped fruit and leavesRake up fallen fruit and diseased leaves to cut down next year’s pests and scab.
- Guard young trunks for winterPut on tree guards against rabbits and voles and paint south-facing trunks white against sunscald.
With the animals
- Hens molt and slow down laying — give extra protein
- Winterize waterers and check heater cords
- Bring animals off pasture before it’s grazed out
With the bees
- Winterize the hivesEntrance reducers and mouse guards on, a slight forward tilt, and a quilt box or insulation where winters are cold.
Garden, orchard and bee jobs are timed from typical mid-April and mid-October frost dates. Members who set their location get jobs timed to their own frost dates.
